Selectivity is any factor that causes variation: Selectivity is important for two reasons. Firstly, it allows biologists who can rarely study a fish population directly, to use catch statistics more accurately to evaluate actual population numbers. This leads to more accurate assessment techniques and a better understanding of the population. Secondly, selectivity can be used as an important management tool to reduce mortality among juvenile and small fishes and increase the catch efficiency of larger fish"--page [1].</marc:subfield>
