The interrelationships between herring stocks in the Canadian Atlantic fisheries as revealed by multivariate analyses of their meristic characters / by S.N. Messieh and J. Longmuir. : Fs70-8/78-45E-PDF

"The problem of herring stock identification is one of the important research problems in management of herring fisheries. In the past, the herring fisheries in the northwest Atlantic, with the exception of those in the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine, were based upon adult fish, caught with fixed gear near the spawning grounds. Fish caught in this manner, during their spawning migration, constituted homogeneous spawning populations and for fisheries management purposes could be treated as discrete stocks"--Introduction, page [1].
