"This research report deals with the coming of television and the early stages of experience with it at an Arctic Canadian settlement of 600 population (seven-eighths Inuit and one-eighth white - the latter hereafter referred to as Qablunait). It is focussed mainly, though not exclusively, upon the native people, 25% of whom at each age level had had no previous experience whatever with the TV medium, while the rest had had usually brief exposure to television only during temporary sojourns elsewhere, e.g., at hospital or as miners or in other occupations and as students in cities farther south. Our effort is to show what the initial impacts were, including anticipatory attitudes, acquisition of TV receivers, viewing patterns, people's own assessment of distinct types of programs and their assessment of the role of television generally as it has begun to play its part among other current influences changing their ways of living and social milieu"--Introduction, page 1.
