5203 |a"This study details the results of a preliminary monitoring survey conducted in the vicinity of one of five former Canadian naval vessels sunk off the coast of British Columbia under the authority of Part 7, Division 3 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). Sediment and tissue samples were collected at the sinking site of the former HMCS Saskatchewan (‘Saskatchewan’) near Nanaimo, BC and analysed for priority contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trace metals and toxicity. This study was conducted to determine whether environmental impacts were occurring from the disposal of this vessel; and to determine the adequacy of vessel clean-up standard and procedures implemented for the protection of the marine environment, specifically with respect to PCBs. The results of this preliminary monitoring survey indicate PCBs are detectable at the site; however there does not appear to be any apparent risk to human health and minimal risk to the environment from the disposal of this vessel"--Abstract, page i.
