These contaminates are extracted in an organic solvent, before and after external pyrolysis, cleaned-up using column chromatography and then analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using high pressure liquid chromatography with an ultra-violet detector (HPLC-UV). The PAH content of the room temperature extract, without external pyrolysis, corresponds to the diesel soot. Room temperature extraction of the sample after pyrolysis gives the PAH content derived from the diesel soot and coal dust in the dust sample.
