"The goal of this document is to provide Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) stakeholders with a solid perspective on the state-of-the-art of CBM and to inform the Canadian Forces on the potential of CBM and Autonomic Logistics (AL) practices for improved military platform performance and cost effective platform life cycle management. Two databases of 4,394 bibliographic records of journal articles, conferences papers, theses and government reports (2006-2011) and 1,204 patent families (1990-2011) were compiled and analyzed using text analytic software. Findings show that CBM research is primarily engaged with technical challenges related to sensor technologies, condition monitoring, and diagnostic and prognostic accuracy. Communications and decision support technologies are also receiving increased attention. The benefits of CBM are substantial and could represent significant cost-efficiencies in the longterm. However, short-term benefits are difficult to realize since initial acquisition and installation costs are high. Careful consideration must be paid to data integration with legacy systems, particularly supply chain management and logistics systems. Work on the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is advancing development of prognostics and health management (PHM) methods as well as the related logistics systems, and is an important area to monitor as lessons learned for the JSF could be applied to retrofitting legacy platforms"--Abstract, page i.
