"In November, 1988, partial results of a continuing national dioxin survey by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada were released, showing unacceptably high levels of dioxins and furans in some marine invertebrates. This resulted in closures of some crab, shrimp and prawn fisheries in Howe Sound and near Prince Rupert. Three companies operating pulpmills at these locations were required by Environment Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, under authority of the Fisheries Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, to undertake further sampling and analysis to determine the extent of contamination. Results of these company studies, released in May, 1989, demonstrated some contamination outside the closure area boundaries. As a result, the closure areas were extended"--Abstract.
