Cominco sediment bioassays, sediment and water chemistry, October and November 1991 / by Benoit Godin and Michael Hagen. : En40-241/92-13E-PDF

"Slag was collected from the Cominco Lead Smelter in Trail, B.C. and tested for toxicity using standard Daphnia magna sediment bioassays. Following the results of the test, sediments were collected from Columbia River sites upstream and downstream of the Cominco discharge. The supernatant waters in the bioassays for both the Cominco slag and the downstream sediment were toxic. The acute toxicity is attributed at least partly to elevated levels of copper and zinc. The physical abrasive effect of sharp fine particles may have been a factor. No attempt was made in these tests to distinguish between physical and chemical effects"--Abstract, page i.
