"The principal motivation for computer networks is the economic advantages of resource sharing - making certain services available to all network subscribers via the network, rather than having to replicate the services at each host computer site. The research described here is a study into the economics of certain such services, to ascertain whether sharing is in fact worthwhile, and into the technical problems of providing the services, both to reveal any implications as to how the communications facility should be provided, and to investigate the practical difficulties that might arise in attempting to share these services. The particular services studied were mass backing storage (both retail and wholesale organization), and graphic output, particularly high quality printing"--Abstract, page 1.
