"Several natural phenomena such as the thickness of lake ice, the depth of frost in the ground, the depth of thawing in permafrost regions, and the spring breakup of lake ice, are correlated more or less closely with the accumulated air temperature below or above the freezing point. Such accumulations have been computed for a number of years for quite a few weather stations mostly in the far north but in general they are unavailable"--p. [1].
