It suggests that the heartland is contracting to central and southwestern Ontario, where the loss of agricultural land is increasingly pronounced. The paper projects current trends to the end of the century and predicts that more than one million hectares of Canada's best agricultural land will be consumed by urban development between 1970 and 2001.
