5203 |a"Geographers and other land resource people have long been interested in studying land use and analyzing land use dynamics. In the past, they have been constrained by land data based on political or some other arbitrary data-gathering units, rather than land class units. However, where land is classified for use or capability as on the C.L.I. maps and when the maps are overlaid manually, it is almost impossible to conduct analyses because of the vast amount of data available. Planners and environmental managers have also sought a tool to aid them in locating, protecting and conducting specific land use activities. Likewise, politicians have sought ways to comprehend the changing nature of the land. This paper is a land use case study that uses the area of the Ottawa map sheet NTS 31G/5 to examine the potential of one system to extract the changes posed by overlaying a series of maps. This system is an on-line interactive graphics system that enables the user to interact with the data stored in the Canada Geographic Information System (C.G.I.S.), which has powerful map overlaying and analysis capabilities. In this study, the information stored is the Canada Land Inventory (C.L.I.) land use and land capability data for the years 1964, 1968 and 1973"--Abstract.
