520 |a"Mark-recapture data indicated 30,300 MSW salmon returned to the Miramichi River in 1986; total returns were 7% greater than predicted in the 1985 assessment 928,400 MSW salmon). Returns of 1SW salmon in 1986, however, greatly exceeded average returns: 110,700 1SW salmon returned, compared to a historic average of 44,900 fish. Increased returns in 1986 may have resulted from good marine survival. Mean weight of 1SW salmon in 1986 was greater than average, indicating favourable growth conditions at sea. the 1986 management plan which restricted homewater harvests of salmon resulted in 9% of MSW salmon and 70% of 2SW salmon potentially surviving to spawn. As a result, spawning requirements were apparently met in 1986. About 54,200 MSW salmon and 37,900 1SW salmon are precited to return in 1987, indicating potential surpluses of 30,600 MSW salmon and 15,300 1SW salmon"--Abstract, page 2.
