Energy and the elderly : facts and observations / Gerald J. Gorn. : RG23-142/1983E-PDF
"Both the literature review and the analysis of the 1978, 1980 CCA data provide similar profiles of the elderly. In general, the elderly use less energy. The elderly use less energy because they tend to have fewer people in the household, live in smaller dwellings and own fewer energy consuming appliances. Their homes however are older and therefore less fuel efficient. (The lower consumption by the elderly reflects the lower consumption by low income people in general.) Although the elderly use less energy, they spend a higher proportion of their income on energy-related expenditures. They may therefore be particularly very vulnerable to increasing energy costs. To save money, the elderly say they have already cut back on the use of appliances which are energy consuming"--Summary.
