"The objective of this study was to review the literature (economics, marketing, consumer behavior, etc.) to address the theory and concepts that form the basis underlying the mandate of the Traded Goods component. In particular, to provide information on the need and rationale for government intervention in the market place via standards/regulations aimed at protecting consumers against product misrepresentation, preventing fraud, enhancing consumer's ability to differentiate and choose among product choices and facilitate trade practices. In particular, the study concentrated on issues related to labelling requirements and the development of standards and their effects on consumers and markets"--page 1.
