"The biology of northern shrimp has several particularities, which in turn influence the exploitation strategy, fishery management and resource conservation. Shrimp play a key role in the ecosystem, acting as an intermediary in the transfer of energy from the lower trophic levels (e.g., zooplankton) to the higher ones (predators such as fish, marine mammals and seabirds). Ecological relationships (e.g., predator-prey and competition) must be maintained among the species affected directly or indirectly by the fishery within the bounds of natural fluctuations in these relationships"--Introduction, page 2.
