Loadings to Lake Ontario by the Niagara River -1980 / K.W. Kuntz. : En39-129/1982E-PDF

"Changes in the chemical characteristics of the Great Lakes have been cause primarily by the rapid increase in material loadings since 1900. Therefore, the amount of material being discharged into the Great Lakes is vital information for the management of Great Lakes Water Quality. The Niagara River, the only outflow for Lake Erie, accounts for 50% of all incoming sediment materials into Lake Ontario and could conceivably also be the largest single source of materials. In 1975, the Water Quality Branch of the Inland Waters Directorate, Ontario Region, (WQB-OR) initiated a daily sampling program at Niagara on the Lake. One of the primary objectives of this program was to obtain annual estimates of Niagara River loading to Lake Ontario. This report will give detailed findings of each of the parameters measured during 1980"--Background, page 3.
