"Using lead-free gasoline in automobiles eliminates lead emissions and reduces the maintenance requirements. The automobile owner can reduce costs for tune-ups, spark-plug changes, oil changes and exhaust system replacements. Over a five year period, a Canadian automobile owner could save $170 in maintenance costs which in terms of gasoline consumption is equivalent to about 6 cents per gallon. This more than offsets the incremental cost of lead-free gasoline manufacture compared to leaded gasoline"--Summary, page i.
