520 |a"In a simulated "rainwater" leaching experiment, five sets of lumber packages, two of rough-cut and two of surfaced hem/fir lumber were bulk-dip treated in commercial sodium tetrachlorophenate/pentachlorophenate (NaTCP/NaPCP) anti-stain solution as part of a normal mill run. Dry-storage periods of 1.5, 3, 6, 18 and 48 hours after dipping were allowed prior to the start of leaching at a rate equivalent to a rainfall of 5 cm per day. Samples of the leachate dripping from the packages were collected. Analysis of the leachate by high performance liquid chromatography revealed up to 300 ppm total chlorinated phenols, near the start of leaching, declining to less than 100 ppm after 9 hours and less, than 50 ppm after about 48 hours. An 18 and 48 hour delay considerably decreased the concentrations of chlorinated phenols at the start of leaching. There were indications that packages of rough-sawn lumber released more preservative into the leachate than surfaced lumber. It was hypothesized that the largest proportion of the leached chlorophenols was contributed by a surface film coating the packaged pieces rather than by leaching from the wood itself"--Summary, page iii
