Protocol for the pelagic fish trawl survey of Lake Winnipeg / Eva C. Enders and Chelsey E. Lumb. : Fs97-6/3404E-PDF
"During recent decades, Lake Winnipeg has experienced substantial changes in environmental conditions and the associated fish community. The effects of eutrophication, flow regulation, fishing pressure, climate change, and the occurrence of cyanobacteria and various aquatic invasive species, in particular Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), Rainbow Smelt (Osmerus mordax), Spiny Water Flea (Bythotrephes longimanus), and Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), significantly impacted the native fish community. Since 2002, a survey of pelagic forage fish species and early life stages of large-bodied fish species has been conducted from the M.V. Namao in the pelagic zone of Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada along a network of fixed survey stations. Fish are caught during spring, summer, and fall from the south basin, Narrows, and north basin of Lake Winnipeg. The catches are then further analysed in the laboratory to generate catch composition, species length, and biomass data"--Abstract, page viii.
