520 |a"Plastics have become part of the everyday lives of Canadians and populations around the world. Poor waste management, as well as improper disposal, have resulted in large amounts of plastic waste entering the environment as plastic pollution. Globally, it is estimated that about 8 million tonnes of plastic pollution enter the oceans every year. This plastic waste can be unintentionally ingested by seabirds, such as the Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), which feed at the surface of the oceans. Sampling plastic in the stomachs of seabirds provides information on plastic pollution on the surface of Canada's oceans. The indicator described here reports the percentage of Northern Fulmars with 0.1 gram (g) or more of plastic in their stomachs at a national and a regional level"--Page 5.
