5203 |a"This report describes a highly portable, short-range, low-information-rate communications system and its associated electronics intended for use in the Canadian Arctic as a back-up to conventional HF systems. This low frequency system operates in the 100 kHz to 200 kHz band and employs an all solid-state transceiver capable of providing an output power in excess of 300 watts. The transmitting antenna is a 2000 foot dipole lying on the surface of the earth. One complete terminal for the system occupies about one cubic foot and weighs less than 50 pounds. Results of several trials conducted in the Canadian Arctic at widespread locations are given and it is shown that a range of at least 200 miles has been achieved in all cases. Expected variations in the maximum communications range are examined in view of the effects of ground conductivity on the antenna efficiency and atmospheric noise on system sensitivity"--Abstract, page 1.
