Raptors and colonial birds of the Yellowknife area and east arm of Great Slave Lake, N.W.T. / by D. Lynne Allen and David M. Ealey. : CW66-682/1979E-PDF
"Surveys for nesting raptors and colonial waterbirds were conducted in the Yellowknife area and east arm of Great Slave Lake from June through September in 1978. Raptor nests found totalled 85 in the Yellowknife area and 136 in the east arm of Great Slave Lake. Most were Bald Eagle nests. The only colonial nesters sighted were larids of which the Herring Gull and Arctic Tern were most numerous. Of the 207 Bald Eagle nests recorded, 57% were on cliffs, 40% were in trees and the remainder were on the ground and utility poles. Over 90% were found within 100 m of water. We found 43 productive Bald Eagle nests and these nests contained an average of 1.6 eaglets. Eighty percent of the productive nests in the Yellowknife area were on islands. Bald Eagles initiated incubation in the second half of April and the young fledged during the first half of August. In the east arm of Great Slave Lake the raptors and colonial birds remain relatively undisturbed. However, outdoor recreational activity and chemical pollution from gold mines may be detrimentally affecting raptor populations in the Yellowknife area. This report includes recommendations to ameliorate the impact of development on the raptors and colonial birds of the study area"--Abstract.
