520 | |a"The extraction of mapping information from optical satellite imagery is a remote sensing application that has been documented for years. Methods and technology are constantly evolving, as well as the quantity and quality of available images. The advent of high resolution (HR) optical satellite imagery for all federal departments will provide national coverage and annual updates for certain Canadian regions. The availability of these images will provide a wide range of possibilities for information analyses, processing and extraction. On the basis of scientific literature, this report documents the operational methods and applications concerning the extraction of mapping information with HR optical imagery. The purpose of this report is to establish the imagery's potential for extraction in order to prioritize development efforts, identify limitations and, most importantly, provide an overview of current knowledge on the topic. It should be noted that this report is not intended to be comprehensive. Furthermore, the term "high resolution" refers to images with a spatial resolution between 0.5 m and 2.0 m"--Introduction, page 1. |
