"Within the framework of Canada's extensive economic relationships with the outside world, the United States has traditionally occupied a position of great importance. More recently, with the emergence of the United States as the world's leading industrial power and with the intensification of Canada's economic ties with that country, it can be fairly stated that the United States stands out as the preponderant external influence shaping the course of Canadian economic affairs. In these circumstances, it is quite natural that Canadians should be showing a widespread and increasing interest in all matters pertaining to Canada-United States economic relations"--Preface.
