"The spectroscopy of rare-earth ions has proved, in the past, to be a fruitful area of research; the spectra Nd³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions, in particular, have been studied in crystals, glasses and chelates and aprotic solvents and many of these rare-earth-doped system have been shown to have excellent characteristics as laser materials. We have carried out a spectroscopic study of Pr³⁺ ions in Se0Cℓ₂-based solvent systems and have previously reported evidence for a local field of D₂d symmetry about the rare-earth ion"--Introduction, page 1.
