In-situ biological barriers for the containment and remediation of contaminated groundwater. : En36-534/9100E-PDF
"A baseline experimental program was undertaken to explore the potential of induced in-situ biofouling as a containment and remediation technique for contaminated groundwater. The project was predicated on the significance of biofilms in removing substrates, and on the effective plugging of pore spaces in soils which will block the flux of water and contaminants. Biofiims play a fundamental role in wastewater and groundwater treatment due to the ecological advantages conferred by attachment to surfaces and interfaces, particularly with respect to the capture and utilization of substrates and nutrients. Biofouling could be exploited to contain a contaminant, and because of copious biofilm growth, also function as an in-situ fixed film bioreactor to remove target contaminants"--Executive summary.
