"Several major changes have been made to the NAFO Division 4R herring database for this years assessment, including revised catch-at-age matrices, revisions to the catch rate indices, and the inclusion of previously unreported catches. Herring landings in 1986 reached 21,400 t, from a TAC of 17,000 t. Spring spawners have generally dominated the annual catch since 1966. Historically, this spawning group has been dominated by the 1968 and 1974 year-classes. However in 1986, the 1980 year-class represented 51% of the catch in numbers"--Abstract, page i.
