"In the analysis presented here we are attempting to assess the role which industries marked by a large proportion of high growth-innovative firms have had in the trends observed in employment growth noted in our earlier analysis of the 1976-1984 period. This period also affords an opportunity to compare the performance of such companies both in a period of economic growth in the late 1970s and during a period of economic decline in the post 1980 recession"--Introduction, page 1.
