"Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) estuaries and bays, like many places around the world, are sensitive to impacts from excess nutrients (eutrophication). Increased nutrient loading to coastal systems can have negative impacts, including loss of biodiversity, seagrass coverage and if anoxia occurs and is sustained, mass mortality of fauna. Given the potential severity of nutrient impacts, it is imperative that any monitoring program be capable of accurately assessing these impacts and that there is a quantitative link between nutrient loading and any response indicator"--Introduction, page 3.
