5203 |a"Two species of Redfish are present in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Unit 1) and Laurentian Channel (Unit 2): Sebastes mentella and S. fasciatus. However, both species are morphologically similar and have been identified as "Sebastes spp." in both stock assessments until 2010 and in the fishery. The malate dehydrogenase locus (MDH-A*) has been used to genetically identify Redfish species at the individual level and to determine the probability distribution of soft anal fin ray (AFR) counts which are used to estimate species compositions at the catch level. This report documents the AFR method that is currently used in survey and how it could be applied to the fishery. The objectives are to 1- compare MDH-A* and microsatellite markers for species identification at the individual level, 2- describe species composition at the catch level using AFR counts, 3- estimate Redfish species composition in catches and describe biases using AFR counts, 4- validate the accuracy of data collected by observers-at-sea (ASO) and port-samplers, and 5- assess species distribution relative to spatial and depth gradients"--Abstract, page vii.
