Side scan sonar survey and study of red and white targets in Lake Ontario - 1978 : report to the Hamilton-Scourge Committee. : En36-539/58-1982E-PDF

"In 1971, Dr. D. A. Nelson was appointed to the staff of the Royal Ontario Museum, as a research associate under the direction of Dr. A. D. Tushingham, Chief Archaeologist. In this capacity Dr. Nelson was asked to determine the source of some 19th century coins which had been found on the Niagara shoreline of Lake Ontario. This work led to an exploration of British, American and Canadian archives and to information describing two major shipwrecks of the war of 1812, which were known to lie somewhere in western Lake Ontario (the coins were unrelated to these wrecks). Dr. Nelson's early work, which led to the probable discovery of one of the vessels in 1973, has been described elsewhere *(Nelson, 1978 and 1979)"--Introduction.
