520 |a"River discharges under ice cover, as estimated by gauging practices, are very difficult to verify. In this report, flow under ice covers has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The results confirm that velocity measurements taken at 0.2 and 0.8 of the water channel depth give velocities for which the average is always very close to the true mean velocity. Engineers can “therefore utilize river flows under ice as determined by this survey method with confidence. "Winter surveys should adopt the procedure as standard"--Management Perspective.
