Fast air pilot neck pain prevalence rates and neck-supported mass : literature review and analysis / Emma Rice, Philip Farrell. : D68-2/132-2020E-PDF

"Aircrew neck pain has been an area of research interest for Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) for many years but fast air pilot neck pain has yet to be examined. The primary purpose of this Scientific Report was to collect fast air pilot neck pain prevalence rates for use in a mass properties modelling activity. During the literature review, key themes in potential neck pain causal factors emerged so the project expanded to analyze five independent variables: geographical region, survey year, aircraft type, helmet type, and helmet mass. The null hypotheses predicted the independent variables would have no effect on the dependent variables of 3-month, 12-month, and career prevalence. Fifty prevalence rates were collected for the modelling activity. The mean prevalence rates for 3-month, 12-month, and career were 49%, 60%, and 69%, respectively. Nonparametric tests found results trending towards significance for helmet type and helmet mass, and statistical significance in the analysis by region. Further investigation with additional variables found the helmet type and mass, when accounting for helmet configuration, were significant (termed helmet system type and mass). Future research should follow up with militaries for updated prevalence rates and the mass properties modelling activity should proceed"--Abstract, page i.
