The West Coast Trail : a reconnaissance / Tony Byrne. : CW66-788/1973E-PDF

"The West Coast Trail was completed in 1912 as a Lifesaving Trail from Bamfield. to Carmanah Point (29 ½ miles) and as a rough telegraph trail from Carmanah to Gordon River (18 1/2 miles). It traverses an area of outstanding coastal features with good opportunities for hiking, viewing marine life, birds and small mammals. There are important Indian remains and visible remnants of almost twenty wrecks. Much of the Trail itself is in poor condition since it has hardly been maintained for several years. The area will become a part of the Pacific Rim National Park in 1974. Recommended is a policy of improving the Trail for reasons of safety and limiting environmental disturbance. The low recreational capacity and escalating use are problems which are best solved by limiting the number of visitors in the near future"--Abstract, page ii.
