520 |a"A multi-year project to assess the potential toxic effects of agricultural crop pesticides on aquatic biota within the Lower Fraser Valley, B.C., was commenced in late 1988. This report describes the Phase I tasks undertaken and completed to initiate the project. The overall objective of Phase I was to develop a site-specific approach for predicting and monitoring the potential toxic effects on aquatic biota of pesticides entering a receiving-water body by surface water runoff from commercial farms. Initially, those herbicides and insecticides registered in Canada and marketed to farmers in the Lower Fraser Valley were examined with respect to their perceived regional use and hazard to the freshwater environment. Based on this appraisal, dinoseb (herbicide) and endosulfan (insecticide) were selected for investigation of their presence and potential toxicity to aquatic life frequenting the study area"--Summary, page ii (first section).
