"A basic understanding of the different types of waterborne pathogens, their sources, the measures that are important for their control and the people that are most at risk for becoming sick is necessary for effective drinking water management and for preventing waterborne disease. This guidance document was prepared in collaboration with the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water and describes these microorganisms, their health effects, how they are transmitted and best practices to ensure safe drinking water"--Executive summary, page 3.
