520 |a"Given the growing interest in using VHR satellite imagery and advanced analysis methods to detect and monitor marine megafauna, this report: 1) reviews the use of VHR satellite imagery to detect marine megafauna, globally and nationally; and 2) explores the potential uses of this technology on the Canadian Pacific Coast. Specifically, the first part of the report outlines: the development of VHR satellite imagery technology; the emergence of using VHR satellite imagery to detect megafauna; and the general opportunities and challenges associated with this approach. Ongoing research in Canada and globally is highlighted. The second part highlights the availability of VHR satellite imagery and some considerations and applications, with a focus on the Pacific Coast. To demonstrate the type and quality of VHR imagery availability for the Pacific Coast, a case study for basking shark areas of interest is included"--Introduction, page 2.
