520 |a"All-optical switching in a GaAs-based multiple quantum well vertical directional coupler has been demonstrated with coupling lengths as short as 160 µm and switching powers of a few milliwatts. Since the lossy multiple quantum well (MQW) layer in this design was used only as a coupling medium between two low-loss waveguides, the device could be operated at wavelengths near the excitonic resonances of the MQW. However, the extinction ratios achievable were limited by saturation of the optical nonlinearity and the switching behaviour was very sensitive to the source wavelength"--Introduction, page [1].
