"In communication systems using a single transmit antenna, the signal energy is emitted according to the antenna pattern, regardless of the data content. In systems using multiple transmit antennas, such as multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems, the spatial pattern of the signal energy is dependent on the data vector transmitted. For some types of MIMO transmission, there may be a very strong directionality for a subset of data vectors. This directional signal energy has the potential to cause interference to users that would be unaffected by transmission from a single antenna. The MIMO signalling strategies that exhibit the strongest directionality are the same ones that appear in most new and emerging wireless standards. Regulatory intervention may be necessary to ensure that interference levels do not disrupt other licenced users"--Abstract, page i.
