520 | |a"The purpose of this document is to explore the potential use of assisted migration (AM) to extend the range of Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endlicher (coast redwood, coastal redwood, or California redwood) northward to the Pacific Rim of Vancouver Island. Coast redwoods are well-known to be among the largest trees and are an important endemic component of forests occupying coastal zones in California and southern Oregon. However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated this tree species 'endangered', with its current habitat reduced due to past logging and facing the threat of further human encroachment. As the Earth's climate changes, warmer temperatures and associated droughts are also threatening habitat in the current native range of the tree. While the specific response of mature coast redwood trees to climate change is uncertain and the climate tolerance for many species often extends beyond their current fundamental niche, there is ongoing concern for conservation of the species as climate change proceeds. Assisted migration of coast redwood provenances is an adaptation strategy that might help counter the potential impact of climate change and loss of habitat"--Introduction. |
