The science questions underpinning the potential for offshore wind turbines on Atlantic Canada's continental shelves / J.B.R. Eamer, C. Greaves, and E.L. King. : M41-11/158-2023E-PDF

"The Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia have signalled an interest in offshore wind development on the Scotian Shelf and in Atlantic Canada more generally. Provincially, a target of 5 GW of offshore wind energy projects are to be awarded leases by 2030, promising at least a fivefold increase in energy production beyond the base electrical load for the province. Federally, a Regional Assessment for offshore wind energy on the continental shelves of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia is underway, which when completed would provide the regulatory framework for such a project to proceed, reducing uncertainty in the market. Future projects will likely go through the impact assessment process, and key data informing these assessments will be geological among others. Offshore wind farms require a variety of infrastructure emplaced both on and under the seabed"--Context.
