Constitutionally entrenched in 1982, this Section defines the rights of all Canadians to have their children educated in their own official language. While access to minority language education (were it English or French) existed in some parts of Canada prior 1982, the advance of Section 23 of the Charter underscored a national commitment to ensuring that such opportunities be available throughout the country.
