"Canadian agriculture has developed into a highly efficient producer of biomass for food and feed. The energy content of the plant biomass produced is about 1755 x 10 BTU annually. Direct food use of plant material in Canada accounts for 50.5 x 10 BTU, 262 x 10 BTU are exported as grain and oilseeds and an estimated 801 x 10 BTU are used as animal feed (grain and forages). Animals graze an additional 595 x 10 BTU from pasture land. Seed, industrial use and losses account for the remaining 46.5 x 10 BTU" -- Abstract, page 1.
