"The long-term and large-scale Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) Project in the boreal forest of northwestern Alberta was initiated in 1998 to test the effects of residual forest structure on ecosystem integrity and forest regeneration. EMEND was designed test how this approach can maintain biotic communities, spatial patterns of forest structure and functional ecosystem integrity in comparison with mixed-wood landscapes that have originated through wildfire and other natural disturbance.
