Chemical and physical characteristics of snow in the Kejimkujik National Park Area II, winter 1984-85 / Thomas A. Clair. : En37-645/2-1986E-PDF

"Fifteen snow samples were collected weekly along each of two, 150 m long transects in the upper Mersey River basin, in southwest Nova Scotia, from January 10 to March 10 in 1985. One transect (Site B) was located in the headwaters area of the basin, the other at the CAPMON atmospheric sampling site, 35 km downstream (Site A). Snowpack depth and water content were similar at both sites over the length of the study. Snow chemistry was highly influenced by seaspray, as the headwaters site, located 30 km from the Bay of Fundy showed higher concentrations of all ions. The data show that nitric acid is more important than sulfuric in the snowpack at both sites. These data can now be used to construct improved hydrological and chemical models of the upper Mersey River and allow us to better study the implications of snowmelt on potential short-term water quality changes"--Abstract and Management Perspective, page 3.
