"The use of autonomous unmanned vehicles (AUVs) for wildlife research has increased rapidly recently. Using smaller AUVs might be a mitigation for flying a full-size aircraft. Here we provide an overview of studies from both published and grey literature that directly or indirectly assess the impacts of AUVs (mainly aerial types) on marine mammals, focusing mainly on species occurring in Canadian waters. As well, we review demonstrated and prospective impact mitigation approaches and current regulatory reporting requirements to identify information gaps and provide suggested guidelines for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) permitting and reporting processes regarding the use of all types of AUVs for marine mammal research"--Abstract, page iv.
