5203 |a"The positive identification of asbestos in industrial products frequently requires the application of more than one method of analysis. Phase contrast optical microscopy, a standard method of asbestos analysis, is often inadequate, particularly if interfering fibres are present. Characterization and determination of asbestos is facilitated by the complementary application of X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEMEDS). Identification of asbestos type and semi-quantitative estimation of content is often possible in bulk specimens by X-ray diffractometry. In the event of ambiguous results, definitive qualitative identification may be achieved by SEMEDS analysis based on the determination of characteristic ratios of constituent elements, including magnesium, silicon, iron, sodium and calcium, relative to standard asbestos fibres. Details of analytical procedures are described."--abstract.
