"The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a member of the Solanaceae or nightshade family. The nightshade family includes a number of horticulturally important crops including tomato, pepper, eggplant and tobacco. Potato cultivation and acceptance as a food product in Europe gradually increased into the 19th century. Potatoes were introduced into Canada in 1623 when a supply of potatoes was delivered to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The potato is now cultivated in all provinces of Canada.
