"Cretaceous and Cenozoic samples, in addition to samples of other ages collected on Bylot Island, Nunavut were examined for source rock potential to evaluate different indications of the presence of a petroleum system in the area. Rock-Eval and vitrinite reflectance analyses were conducted for these samples collected from outcrops on the island during field trips by GSC and university researchers. The results revealed the presence of Type III source rocks with TOC ranging between 1-56%, however most of the samples are immature with respect to hydrocarbon generation (below 0.5% VRo and average Tmax of 425ºC). The results of these analyses are valuable for hydrocarbon resource assessment of the eastern Canadian Arctic margin, needed to initiate discussions for Marine Protected Areas for the Canadian government to meet its carbon net zero objectives by 2050"--Executive Summary, page i.
